First Finish for 2013

Last night I finally finished my first ornament for 2013. Stitching is slow going since I am having a lot of problems with my hands. Finally realized I have carpel tunnel in both hands. There are times I cannot even pick up a needle to stitch thus the reason everything is taking me so long to stitch. I know I have to go and see someone about this but am not ready to hear the word surgery.

So sorry to hear about your hand problem. Don't put off seeing the doctor. There are things to try before you get to the surgery option. Good luck!

Linda,

I love the way the ornament turned out. I might bead my other one, like you did.

Also, there are people at PT that are working on their carpal tunnel instead of surgery. They might just send you to PT to see what that does for you first.

Smile and stay positive

I love the background stitch you chose. Beautiful and elegant!

In yoga class, they taught us a pose to help relieve carpal tunnel. Lie on the floor (yes, it has to be the floor, not the bed), face down. You can turn your head to the side, but don't put a pillow under your head, because you want your spine in alignment. Put your arms straight at your side, hands flat down with the palms on the floor. Now slide each hand under your hip, so that the hand is sandwiched between the floor and your body. Your arms are straight, so if your arms are shorter or longer, your hands may be a little up or down on your body. Rest like that, and press your palms into the floor. Hold it for a few seconds, then release, then press again. Then lie there for a minute or so. Increase the amount of time you are pressing into the floor gradually, and build up to longer times. Good luck! Sending prayers and healing energy your way!

I love your ornament. I am so sorry to hear about the hand problems. Big bummer for a stitcher. I hope you get some relief after seeing the doctor. I am going to try the yoga pose and see what happens.

I do so understand your hand problems. I have a blog as well but had to take a hiatus because I haven't been able to stitch much at all. But I started something last night that I might blog about. I am definitely going to try your yoga exercise to see if it helps mine. I love your ornament and would love to know what the background stitch is.

hi I thought I had carpal tunnel, couldn't hold a glass even, but when I stopped the Statin drug it went away in less than 2 months. Ask your doctor if you are on one. best wishes

Surgery isn't the only option for carpal tunnel. Talk to your doctor and see what you can try before you resort to surgery. Rest is important, though. Sadly, no all day stitching sessions. Good luck!

Hi, Linda - Love the ornament - so cute! Don't love hearing that your hands are bothering you. It's good to hear that commenters are saying there are other options besides surgery.

I love the background stitch! It's so festive.

I'm actually a big proponent of of CT surgery. I had the surgery on my right hand almost two years ago and it's the best thing I ever did! I had a super duper hand surgeon at the Curtis Hand Institute in Baltimore (I recommend going to a hand surgeon, not a general orthopedic surgeon) and he did endoscopic surgery instead of the traditional open method. I started PT about a week after surgery and did it for a total of six weeks. My hand never felt better! Yes, I couldn't stitch for almost two months but I can't believe how I was able to do it before. My left hand has been giving me problems the last couple of months and I'm thinking of doing that one in the late spring or early summer. If you want to chat about it, just let me know. :-)
